Remote Insurance Underwriter Jobs in California

Join a Purpose-Driven Insurance Team—From Anywhere in California

Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in the world of insurance while working remotely from the comfort of your home in California? We're seeking a Remote Insurance Underwriter who thrives in a supportive, diverse team environment and wants to contribute to an inclusive workplace that values every perspective. With an annual salary of $108,290, this role is ideal for an experienced professional who combines analytical sharpness with a deep sense of empathy and fairness.

Who You’ll Work With

Imagine being part of a collaborative underwriting unit that brings together individuals from all walks of life, each contributing their unique lens to shape thoughtful, balanced coverage decisions. Our team includes former claims adjusters, small business advocates, and finance experts who share a passion for protecting people, businesses, and futures. Whether you're issuing commercial policies or reviewing complex risk portfolios, you'll be backed by a knowledgeable, encouraging crew.

Our Culture: Inclusion at the Heart

We believe that diverse teams build stronger, more resilient companies. Our remote-first culture encourages you to bring your whole self to work. Many of our employees are parents, veterans, caregivers, first-generation college grads, and multilingual professionals. We actively support every identity through open dialogue, inclusive benefits, and leadership pathways that reflect real equity.

Your Role: Making Confident, Compassionate Decisions

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Assessing risk with integrity: Analyze applications for commercial and personal insurance, using a blend of underwriting software, client data, and human judgment.
  • Collaborating across functions: Work with brokers, claims specialists, and sales reps to align underwriting decisions with customer needs and company goals.
  • Balancing risk and opportunity: Evaluate new submissions, renewals, and endorsements—identifying ways to support both business growth and responsible risk selection.
  • Championing fairness: Ensure underwriting guidelines are applied consistently and inclusively, minimizing unconscious bias in decision-making.
  • Continuous learning: Stay informed about evolving state regulations, climate risk factors, and market conditions that affect underwriting policy.

What Makes You a Great Fit

We’re looking for a well-rounded professional who brings both expertise and heart to the role. You should be able to weigh numbers and narratives, policies and people, with equal care.

Core Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in property & casualty underwriting or a related risk assessment role
  • Strong working knowledge of rating methodologies, loss runs, and actuarial tools
  • Comfortable with remote tools like Salesforce, Guidewire, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams
  • Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or working toward industry certifications
  • Strong communicator with the ability to articulate complex underwriting decisions clearly and thoughtfully

Soft Skills That Matter:

  • Empathetic thinker with a commitment to fairness and objectivity
  • Curious mindset, always asking how decisions affect real-world outcomes
  • Enthusiastic team contributor who values input and feedback
  • Culturally aware and respectful of various customer and colleague backgrounds

Your Remote Work Environment

Working remotely doesn’t mean working alone. You’ll participate in regular team huddles, virtual peer mentoring, monthly diversity spotlights, and optional coffee chats with leadership. From ergonomic support stipends to inclusive mental health resources, your workspace will be as nurturing as it is productive.

Tools & Platforms You’ll Use:

  • Underwriting Systems: Guidewire, Duck Creek, and proprietary scoring models
  • Communication Tools: Slack, Zoom, and MS Teams
  • Collaboration Tools: Confluence, Jira, Trello
  • Data Analytics Platforms: Tableau, SQL dashboards for underwriting trends

Growth Opportunities

This role isn't just about today’s tasks—it’s about your future. We’re proud to promote from within and invest in your development. Many of our senior underwriters started in roles just like this one. You'll have access to:

  • Monthly upskilling workshops
  • Annual inclusion & leadership retreats (virtual or in-person)
  • Tuition reimbursement for continued insurance education
  • One-on-one mentorship programs

A Commitment to Equity and Representation

We take pride in fostering a workplace rooted in fairness and mutual respect, where individuals from all backgrounds are valued. Our mission is to reflect the richness of California’s diverse communities—from San Diego to Sacramento—in everything we do.

You’ll be joining a workplace that celebrates difference, champions underrepresented voices, and takes action on inclusion every day, not just during awareness months. If you’ve ever felt overlooked or underestimated in previous roles, this is a place where your story becomes your strength.
